Taking applications for my new hiking buddy! My name is Gilly. I’m 6 years old and have not had many good breaks in my life. I’ve lived mostly in hoarding and commercial breeding situations with uncaring people. I was adopted but due to family circumstances, they had to focus on caring for her and they couldn’t take care of me.
And despite it all I love people and dogs. My foster mom has hardly ever seen a dog with as nice of a temperament as me. I do have my quirks like being afraid of things on TV or pictures of lions on walls. And I spin (adorably), likely due to my brain not developing right because of living in a cage.
My front leg got broken and no one noticed so it was never treated and healed wrong. As such I have arthritis. My foster mom cannot believe how caring and tolerant I am, when she thinks of all that pain I must have been in for so long. (The vet said it was impossible to say when or how the injury happened but I was lame when she got me.)
I take medicine and joint supplements which helps. I can, and love to, go for long walks and hikes. If you are looking for a running partner I’m not your girl. The vet says I can’t do anything high impact. But walking and circulation are great for me and I love it. And I’m a nice dog who stays with you and doesn’t try to stop and sniff every blade of grass.
Since I’m 6 all I need for exercise is a good walk, 30-60 minutes, each day. Though I for sure can do longer hikes on the weekends! I amaze my foster mom with how incredibly tolerant I am of young dogs. But at my age I don’t really like to play, as patient as I am with other dogs.
My foster mom has yet to find a person I don’t love. I’ve been very sweet to all the children in the home and neighborhood. I don’t jump on people or countersurf or garbage dive. On a schedule with lots of playing outside with my family I have not had one accident.
Here’s a note from my foster mom:
I love Gilly so much it hurts. My kids beg to keep her. I know our family’s job is to keep helping more and more dogs find their forever families. And Gilly is highly adoptable. So we need to get her situated with a great forever family and then help the next dog in need. Gilly has a lovely social temperament with dogs and humans. She needs a human to look out for her and understand her. Because she is so darn nice it sometimes seems she is enjoying things she isn’t.
Gilly has been very respectful of my dominant toy poodle and always defers to her. She is tolerant of young dogs but doesn’t really enjoy them. She has a history of resource guarding beds and humans. This is not overly surprising given all she has been through. So her most ideal would be a single dog situation where she gets the love all to herself, after a lifetime of not having a human to love her. She would be fine with older confident dogs but I would rather not younger dogs. The play might be too much with her arthritis and she is the kind of dog that is much more secure with a human and canine leader.
There have been reports of leash aggression so I would be mindful about giving her space from other dogs on leash. However, I walk her each day and have not seen any leash aggression, even when the neighbor’s dog chased us or when we are passing another dog on a sidewalk. It is possible the behavior was when she was injured and hurting so she preemptively aggressed. But still I would assume she needs space and pull her attention onto you when other dogs pass. She has always been fine off leash with other dogs but as a trainer I can tell you she is tolerating off leash play, not enjoying it. And she doesn’t need significant exercise at her age. So I would not recommend daycare or the dog park. But she should be fine in off leash social situations with company etc.
Many of our dogs are obtained from commercial breeders where they spent their lives getting comfort from their canine friends. In turn, most require another companion dog in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a particular dog, and do not currently have a dog residing with you, please understand that your home might not be the right fit for many of our dogs.

ADOPTION EVENTS:
Adoption events are updated at the top of each dogs animals' as their foster home signs up. Check back for updates on which events they will be attending. If an event is not listed within their bio above, the animal is not planning to attend. Please understand that all of our pets are in volunteer foster homes and sometimes "life" happens and the foster family cannot make it to their scheduled adoption event. If you are traveling from a far distance to meet a specific animal, please understand we cannot guarantee event attendance. We recommend filling out an application and we will set up a private appointment. Private appointments are only scheduled after an application is submitted and approved.
ADOPTION PROCEDURE:
The first step in our process is to complete an online adoption application on our website:
Note: In most circumstances Underdog Rescue will only adopt within 60 miles of Minneapolis, MN.
All of our foster animals can be seen by appointment with an approved adoption application. Contact us at http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/contact-us/ if you have further questions.
FOSTER CARE:
All of our animals are fostered in individual homes or doggie daycare facilities. While they are in our care, they are part of our families and given lots of love. We work on training, crate-training and socialization prior to adoption, but each bio is written by the foster as they see them, in their home. Each animal's behavior is evaluated and we have a sense of its temperament and personality, but it cannot be guaranteed. We look for adopters who will give each animal the wonderful life and permanent home that he or she deserves in time and with patience. If you have an interest and ability to be a foster home, please visit our website www.underdogrescuemn.com/foster-applications and fill out a foster application.
NUTRITION:
Nutrition is vital to the rehabilitation and life-long health of our pets. All of our foster animals are fed a premium diet such as NutriSource, Canidae, Orijen, Nature's Variety, Fromm, Pure Vita, Stella and Chewy's, Primal, or balanced raw diet. All adopters are required to continue providing premium diets for the life of the animal.
