Paws

After almost six months in his foster home, Hari is finally ready to meet his forever family! When he was initially brought in for his neuter, it was discovered that some of his liver enzymes were elevated, which was unusual. After several months and many thousands of dollars of testing (including an MRI at the UofM and biopsy) to figure out what was causing the elevation, it has been determined that (in layman’s terms) he has irregular blood flow into and out of his liver, so it works a bit harder to process. Hari has NO outward symptoms of this at this time, but it basically means that long term, he should be on a liver support diet (there is prescription foods, but also avoiding certain types of foods/treats) and regular monitoring of his liver enzymes, and prompt vet attention should he ever show any signs. We are hopeful that he should live a long, healthy and happy life, but any prospective families should expect to provide him with consistent veterinary support (as with any bulldog, haha!).

If you’ve made it this far, we would love to tell you about the sweetest guy around. He is going to make THE best boy for his family. Hari is a laid back lover type – he will sit in your lap for pets every moment you let him, but he is never pushy or demanding. He makes the perfect office buddy as he loves to be right by your side, and never makes a peep (unless he is in his kennel and knows you’re around and he wants to be with you). His foster home has never seen a dog go into a trance from ‘puppy massage time’ like this boy does.  It’s hilarious. Totally Instagram worthy. If you have a Netflix & Chill vibe, this boy is ready to live his best life with you.

Hari is what we would call a people dog. He has never shown any aggression towards cats or other dogs, but it took him 5 months to engage in play with his resident fur siblings. Perhaps he is learning, perhaps he is feeling better or perhaps the resident pups finally wore him down and he conceded to play!  While he has a playful side, he would much rather engage in play with his humans. He’s great with all gentle people, including respectful kids. He is a bit hesitant with new situations and new people (you can call it shy) but he is friendly towards all. As he is a bit nervous with new things,  he would do best in a home with either kids 5+ that understand how to be respectful and give him space if it is needed, or a home where kids might be coming later on, and he can learn their behaviors as they grow. Throwing him into a situation with toddlers right away may be tough for him.

Hari is crate trained, but as mentioned above, he will chirp in his crate if he hears you, or if you’re taking too long to let him out in the morning. He is quiet all night, and he is quiet if you crate him and are actually gone, so shared walls should be fine. He does well on a leash, and has great recall. He is potty trained, and will go to the door but it is to be expected that he may have a few pee accidents when he first goes into a new home and learns the ropes (and you learn his body language) as he is silent and won’t bark or whine. If it’s raining, you need to go out with him and be direct with him that it’s potty time. He will go, but VERY grudgingly. He hates rain. Snow is okay, but he is used to having a shoveled potty area. He is good in the car, but it is recommend a car harness both for safety, and also because sometimes he just REALLY wants to come over to your side for snuggles.

He would LOVE to be your one and only boy, sleep with you, and go to work with you if your situation allows for it.

NOTE:  Upon completing bloodwork for Hari, he showed very abnormal levels. After a trip to the U of M, some biopsies, and a few vet visits later, Hari has been assumed to have Microvascular dysplasia - or small, multiple shunts in the liver.  He should be kept on a diet to help his liver and have his liver values periodically checked.  If any vomiting, lethargy, neurological changes occur, it would be cause for a vet visit.  Caution should also be used with medications in the future that could affect the liver.  Right now, Hari shows no symptoms of any issues and acts just like a normal dog!   His forever home should be aware and prepared, should that change in his future.

Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders. Each animal's bio is based on our experience of the animal within our care, an educated guess based on physical characteristics, temperament and information shared. Each dog receives basic grooming when coming into rescue, but for some dogs they have not received grooming attention until recently and grooming may be required shortly after adoption. This will be at the adopter’s expense, so we encourage you to research the breed and be prepared for grooming expenses. Underdog cannot guarantee hypoallergenic or non-shedding qualities of any dogs in our rescue. Some of the animals come from situations where they are lacking experience in a home and confidence in humans. In turn, they require another companion dog and/or a fenced in yard in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a particular dog whose bio states those needs and do not currently have them, please understand that your home might not be the right fit. Please use the filter on our Adoptable Dogs page to find the perfect match for your home.

Bulldogs are a member of the Brachycephalic breed and therefore have a host of health issues that may arise.  Because these dogs are new into our rescue, health issues in the future may arise that we are not aware of.  Some of these issues are allergies, eye issues, yeast infections, interdigital cysts, slipped disks in their back, breathing problems, among a host of others that can occur at any time or when seasons change. While breed experience is not required, we encourage you to thoroughly research the breed and its financial, medical, and environmental needs to be sure the breed is a good fit for you and your family.  It is estimated that the average bulldog owner spends $2,000 per year on medical needs.  Hari did have surgery on his nares to widen his nostrils and improve his quality of breathing. You can see in some of his photos how tight his nares were! This has made a huge improvement on his breathing, and that cost is reflected within his adoption fee.

Bulldogs are one of the most expensive dogs to own, maintain, and rescue and our adoption fees reflect such expenses.  The application process for bulldogs usually moves quite quickly as they are a popular breed, so we ask that adopters do research and be prepared for adoption at the time you submit your application.  They are happy, goofy, playful characters and we are excited you are taking the first steps into rescuing one!

This dog requires an application fee.  This fee must be paid within 24 hours or your application will be considered void.    We will not review or contact applicants that have not completed the payment portion. Bulldog Applications will be responded to within 5 business days, after receipt of the application fee.  Please understand that paying the fee does not guarantee you will be approved to adopt the bulldog. Our goal is place bulldogs in homes that are suited for their individual needs. You may be willing and able to provide a great home, but if it doesn’t meet the specific needs of the bulldog, we will not approve your application.

ADOPTION EVENTS:

Adoption events are updated at the top of each dogs animals' as their foster home signs up. Check back for updates on which events they will be attending. If an event is not listed within their bio above, the animal is not planning to attend.  Please understand that all of our pets are in volunteer foster homes and sometimes "life" happens and the foster family cannot make it to their scheduled adoption event. If you are traveling from a far distance to meet a specific animal, please understand we cannot guarantee event attendance. We recommend filling out an application and we will set up a private appointment. Private appointments are only scheduled after an application is submitted and approved.

ADOPTION PROCEDURE:

The first step in our process is to complete an online adoption application on our website:
Note: In most circumstances Underdog Rescue will only adopt within 60 miles of Minneapolis, MN.
All of our foster animals can be seen by appointment with an approved adoption application. Contact us at http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/contact-us/ if you have further questions.

FOSTER CARE:

All of our animals are fostered in individual homes or doggie daycare facilities. While they are in our care, they are part of our families and given lots of love. We work on training, crate-training and socialization prior to adoption, but each bio is written by the foster as they see them, in their home. Each animal's behavior is evaluated and we have a sense of its temperament and personality, but it cannot be guaranteed. We look for adopters who will give each animal the wonderful life and permanent home that he or she deserves in time and with patience.  If you have an interest and ability to be a foster home, please visit our website  www.underdogrescuemn.com/foster-applications  and fill out a foster application.

NUTRITION:

Nutrition is vital to the rehabilitation and life-long health of our pets.  All of our foster animals are fed a premium diet such as NutriSource, Canidae, Orijen, Nature's Variety, Fromm, Pure Vita, Stella and Chewy's, Primal, or balanced raw diet.  All adopters are required to continue providing premium diets for the life of the animal.
