Hi, I’m Esmerelda and I am a gorgeous 5 year old cocker spaniel and am the perfect mix of sweet and shy.

Let’s talk about how sweet and quiet I am! I am a lovely house guest – while foster mom works from home, I like to lay on my dog bed near her. I’m very comfortable in the house and like to have a nice safe spot on the corner of the couch if we are hanging out watching tv. At night I like to sleep a kennel next to foster mom’s bed or in mom’s bed. Guess which I like best? Hee hee! Something special about me you need to know … bull dozer is one of my favorite games when we are snuggling in bed. I like to wake my people up with a smooch on the face then I like to wiggle and roll my body until you give me belly rubs. It is very important that my forever home make some “we” time in the morning for us to bond.

You also need to know that I am a very gentle soul and am working on being brave – there are so many new things in a home with people that I haven’t experienced. I am trying hard to trust my new people and am almost there!  I get worried about loud noises and commotion, so having little kids in my forever home might not be a good idea unless they understand shy dogs. With the help of the other dogs, I am coming out of my shell and starting to show them my goofy side. Sometimes I wiggle my tiny tail (it’s so cute!) and sometimes I wiggle my whole butt when foster mom comes home from being gone – that’s even cuter!

We have been working on dog skills and I am making progress - with time and patience I know we will get there! I don’t know how to walk on a leash and freeze when it is attached to my collar, so a fenced yard is required in my forever home. Crate training isn’t my favorite thing – I will go in there if needed, but I have been doing great if left out when foster mom goes somewhere for a short time. Potty training is going great – foster mom says I am a super girl when we stick to our routine! We are working on figuring out a cue so I can let my people know when I need to go out. For now, keeping me on a good schedule is working!

Having a social and confident dog in my forever home is required to continue to help me build confidence and learn how to be a dog. I love to watch and mimic the resident dogs and they helped me get used to a new routine. They have taught me how to wiggle into the fun and ask for pets and scritches, that the best time to snuggle is in the morning before the alarm goes off and how to do zoomies! I had so much fun doing zoomies that foster mom is excited to see me do it again!

All I need now is you! A patient family that promises to love me unconditionally and never give up on me. I might be shy, but I have an enormous heart that I want to share with you. Let’s do this together! Love Esmerelda

Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders.  Each animal's bio is based on our experience of the animal within our care, an educated guess based on physical characteristics, temperament and information shared. Some of the animals come from situations where they are lacking experience in a home and confidence in humans. In turn, they require another companion dog and/or a fenced in yard in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a particular dog whose bio states those needs and do not currently have them, please understand that your home might not be the right fit.  Please use the filter on our Adoptable Dogs page to find the perfect match for your home.

ADOPTION EVENTS:

Adoption events are updated at the top of each dogs animals' as their foster home signs up. Check back for updates on which events they will be attending. If an event is not listed within their bio above, the animal is not planning to attend.  Please understand that all of our pets are in volunteer foster homes and sometimes "life" happens and the foster family cannot make it to their scheduled adoption event. If you are traveling from a far distance to meet a specific animal, please understand we cannot guarantee event attendance. We recommend filling out an application and we will set up a private appointment. Private appointments are only scheduled after an application is submitted and approved.

ADOPTION PROCEDURE:

The first step in our process is to complete an online adoption application on our website:
Note: In most circumstances Underdog Rescue will only adopt within 60 miles of Minneapolis, MN.
All of our foster animals can be seen by appointment with an approved adoption application. Contact us at http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/contact-us/ if you have further questions.

FOSTER CARE:

All of our animals are fostered in individual homes or doggie daycare facilities. While they are in our care, they are part of our families and given lots of love. We work on training, crate-training and socialization prior to adoption, but each bio is written by the foster as they see them, in their home. Each animal's behavior is evaluated and we have a sense of its temperament and personality, but it cannot be guaranteed. We look for adopters who will give each animal the wonderful life and permanent home that he or she deserves in time and with patience.  If you have an interest and ability to be a foster home, please visit our website  www.underdogrescuemn.com/foster-applications  and fill out a foster application.

NUTRITION:

Nutrition is vital to the rehabilitation and life-long health of our pets.  All of our foster animals are fed a premium diet such as NutriSource, Canidae, Orijen, Nature's Variety, Fromm, Pure Vita, Stella and Chewy's, Primal, or balanced raw diet.  All adopters are required to continue providing premium diets for the life of the animal.
