Hello, my name is Zara, and I am a wonderfully precious young adult female Chihuahua mix who, like most Chihuahua’s, wants to snuggle in a lap more than anything else…when I’m at home anyway. If I’m out on the town, like at the dog park, I love to run, bark and challenge the other dogs…foster mom says that when I get to the park, I’m a “funny tiny holy terror” and she is probably right!! I think I’m the boss of everyone…wait, I KNOW I’m the boss of everyone!! Eventually I do calm down though and will follow foster mom around. I live with a resident wiener dog with whom I play because he insists that I do so but if I had my druthers, I’d spend the majority of my day curled in a ball on or next to my human!! When I’m not snuggling, bossing someone around, or engaging in a mandatory play session with the wiener-meister (that’s what I call him) I enjoy eating popcorn, eggs and sausage and chewing on bully sticks. I am not however, very into toys.

I am very small so I can get a little nervous and sometimes nippy when I first meet other dogs but once I am confident that they won’t crush me, I’m good and will be friendly. When I first got to my foster home it took me two days before I felt comfortable enough to settle in…I would bark, growl and even nip at foster mom’s bigger dogs…remember I AM the BOSS!!! Anyway, all is fine now, and we are living in perfect harmony! I have not had any experience with the crate…thankfully, because I belong in the rest of the house with the family. I also have not met any cats or kids…foster mom says she thinks I’m too small for children under 12 years old and that is probably an accurate assessment since I am fearful of overwhelming commotion. I am a very smart girl who knows what to do when mom says “come,” “outside,” and “go potty” and I am leash and potty trained. As a matter of fact, foster mom says that I’m a “SUPERSTAR” at doing my business outside…especially on these cold days…I go out, do my thing, and am back in the warm house within minutes…mom even put some straw out on the path to make it easier on my tootsies!! She’s pretty awesome!!

I am a great watch dog and will alert you to anyone outside if I can get to a window. Admittedly, I’m a bit of a climber…foster mom calls me “Squirrel” because I like to cling to her with my front paws, then climb into her lap, then up to her shoulder and I won’t let go…nope, I just hang out there as long as I can. Foster mom has to be VERY careful when we’re driving in the car if I’m unsecured because I will end up wedged between her back and the seat or up on her shoulders. I love when foster mom zips me up into her sweatshirt so I’m as snug as a bug in a rug!!! She says she does that when she “gets tired of holding me” …. OH c’mon…who in the world would EVER get tired of holding lil ole me!!?!! Anyway, I prefer people over dogs, and I am the BEST neck warmer you will ever find!!! If you adopt me you MUST let me sleep on your pillow, on your head or wrapped around your neck and let me tell you, I may be tiny, but I can be forceful, and I absolutely insist that you do that for me…it’s a non-negotiable!!! (BIG SMILE). Not to mention that I have very light snores that are absolutely delightful, and they will help you slip right into dream land.

Anyway, even though foster mom is going to be sad to lose her neck warmer, but she has my best interests at heart and knows that a safe furever home is my biggest dream. So, if you are a patient person who will love me unconditionally, keep me safe, NOT give up on me and will meet my afore mentioned non-negotiable demand then you can stop looking right now because we both have found our perfect match!! You must hurry and get here so we can go home and start snugglin’ I will show you how delightful my snores really are. See you soon, Zara

Many of our dogs are obtained from commercial breeders where they spent their lives getting comfort from their canine friends.  In turn, most require another companion dog in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a particular dog, and do not currently have a dog residing with you, please understand that your home might not be the right fit for many of our dogs.

ADOPTION EVENTS:

Adoption events are updated at the top of each dogs animals' as their foster home signs up. Check back for updates on which events they will be attending. If an event is not listed within their bio above, the animal is not planning to attend.  Please understand that all of our pets are in volunteer foster homes and sometimes "life" happens and the foster family cannot make it to their scheduled adoption event. If you are traveling from a far distance to meet a specific animal, please understand we cannot guarantee event attendance. We recommend filling out an application and we will set up a private appointment. Private appointments are only scheduled after an application is submitted and approved.

ADOPTION PROCEDURE:

The first step in our process is to complete an online adoption application on our website:
Note: In most circumstances Underdog Rescue will only adopt within 60 miles of Minneapolis, MN.
All of our foster animals can be seen by appointment with an approved adoption application. Contact us at http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/contact-us/ if you have further questions.

FOSTER CARE:

All of our animals are fostered in individual homes or doggie daycare facilities. While they are in our care, they are part of our families and given lots of love. We work on training, crate-training and socialization prior to adoption, but each bio is written by the foster as they see them, in their home. Each animal's behavior is evaluated and we have a sense of its temperament and personality, but it cannot be guaranteed. We look for adopters who will give each animal the wonderful life and permanent home that he or she deserves in time and with patience.  If you have an interest and ability to be a foster home, please visit our website  www.underdogrescuemn.com/foster-applications  and fill out a foster application.

NUTRITION:

Nutrition is vital to the rehabilitation and life-long health of our pets.  All of our foster animals are fed a premium diet such as NutriSource, Canidae, Orijen, Nature's Variety, Fromm, Pure Vita, Stella and Chewy's, Primal, or balanced raw diet.  All adopters are required to continue providing premium diets for the life of the animal.
