Meet Patton! Yes, he is a lady killer. And when I say lady killer, I mean he is going to look deep into your eyes at first sight, and tell you that he hates you. Yes, I'm probably right. Because he's a classic stubborn boy Chihuahua, and that's just how they are. Thankfully there's a secret weapon to be used on ALL stubborn boys.... food. He loves it, and you've got it. This means that in about two days, those hateful stares become stars in his eyes, and he will never leave you alone again. Ever.
Chihuahuas are one of the most misunderstood breeds of dog, and are consequently the second most likely to be abandoned at a shelter. They are extremely loyal dogs, and tend to bond strongly to one person, even in a household.
Once he bonds to his person, he is a champion lover. He has gentle kisses, the sweetest smiles, and he wraps his paws around your hand and hugs. He is the epitome of purse dog. He will want to go everywhere you go, and at a (believe it or not kind of chubby) 4 pounds, he practically fits in your pocket. Because of his tiny stature and strong bond with his person, a home without kids under 12 will be best for Patton.
Training will be important for him. He probably won't ever LOVE your friends picking him up, and kids wanting to walk up and pet him might always be a 'No, Thank You' but this type of behavior is 100% able to be improved upon with positive reinforcement training. Without training and expectations of him, yes, it can get worse. Consistency and exposure are key, and you will have an AMAZING dog.
Speaking of training... he is doing GREAT in his crate, and shockingly, outside! He is quiet in the crate and keeps it clean all night. He does his business right away when we go outside. He has had a few accidents, but mostly because I'm not reading his cues. He definitely knows outside is the place to go! Patton is great with other dogs, and I haven't seen him get territorial with any *yet* but again, these guys can develop behaviors the more comfortable they get - consistency in expectations again is key.
Patton is the cutest dog you'll probably ever see - but an understanding of the Chihuahua breed and commitment to positively guiding his manners will be key to a successful match with him! His foster is super happy to share guidance and references for training to help him transition successfully into his forever home.
Many of our dogs are obtained from commercial breeders where they spent their lives getting comfort from their canine friends. In turn, most require another companion dog in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a particular dog, and do not currently have a dog residing with you, please understand that your home might not be the right fit for many of our dogs.

ADOPTION EVENTS:
Adoption events are updated at the top of each dogs animals' as their foster home signs up. Check back for updates on which events they will be attending. If an event is not listed within their bio above, the animal is not planning to attend. Please understand that all of our pets are in volunteer foster homes and sometimes "life" happens and the foster family cannot make it to their scheduled adoption event. If you are traveling from a far distance to meet a specific animal, please understand we cannot guarantee event attendance. We recommend filling out an application and we will set up a private appointment. Private appointments are only scheduled after an application is submitted and approved.
ADOPTION PROCEDURE:
The first step in our process is to complete an online adoption application on our website:
Note: In most circumstances Underdog Rescue will only adopt within 60 miles of Minneapolis, MN.
All of our foster animals can be seen by appointment with an approved adoption application. Contact us at http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/contact-us/ if you have further questions.
FOSTER CARE:
All of our animals are fostered in individual homes or doggie daycare facilities. While they are in our care, they are part of our families and given lots of love. We work on training, crate-training and socialization prior to adoption, but each bio is written by the foster as they see them, in their home. Each animal's behavior is evaluated and we have a sense of its temperament and personality, but it cannot be guaranteed. We look for adopters who will give each animal the wonderful life and permanent home that he or she deserves in time and with patience. If you have an interest and ability to be a foster home, please visit our website www.underdogrescuemn.com/foster-applications and fill out a foster application.
NUTRITION:
Nutrition is vital to the rehabilitation and life-long health of our pets. All of our foster animals are fed a premium diet such as NutriSource, Canidae, Orijen, Nature's Variety, Fromm, Pure Vita, Stella and Chewy's, Primal, or balanced raw diet. All adopters are required to continue providing premium diets for the life of the animal.
