Nina is a beautiful, petite girl looking for a calm place to cuddle with people of her own. She is an absolute love bug when she feels safe, and would win a gold medal for napping buddy if that was an Olympic event.
We think Nina is part Australian shepherd, but we aren't sure; she is about 33 pounds and has the most expressive ears we've ever seen. She has lived as a stray and likely been abused, so she is working through some resource guarding issues and is stressed out by loud noises, quick motions, and new people (although she warms up to new people quickly). Nina is easily frightened by cars and unexpected noises, so walks in urban areas are stressful. She can also scale fences and LOVES chasing squirrels, so she should not be allowed off leash in a fenced yard until she knows her surroundings. Her foster family has found that she runs back into the house now that she knows that is a safe spot. A fenced yard is required; a quiet suburban or rural location would be even better. She has some separation anxiety and will bark if left alone (although she quiets down eventually), so an apartment or townhouse would be a challenge.
Nina should be an only pet; she has had issues with other dogs, and although she no longer barks at the resident cat (at least...not all the time), she still wants to chase him and gets anxious if she doesn't know where he is. Although she loves younger children, she has felt the need to resource guard the six year old in her current foster home, and would do better with older dog-savvy kids (12+). When she knows the routine and feels calm, she is fully potty trained, but she sometimes has stress accidents if not taken out right away when she gets anxious or too excited. A home without other animals and with predictable humans would allow her cuddly, playful personality to shine.
Speaking of play! Nina loves squeaky toys, and will do almost anything for a Kong full of treats. She also loves obedience training and learns quickly (like...scary fast). She has learned sit, come, look at me, touch, and leave it. We are working on "down," "go to your bed," and "wait," and she is doing great (as long as treats are involved). Her forever family will need to commit to ongoing obedience work, both to build better manners and let Nina know that she doesn't have to be in charge (which will help her anxiety). She would be a great candidate for agility or flyball, or other performance activities. She has also proven to be a good running buddy, and her foster family is getting her used to a skijoring harness for some rollerblading fun. She has a great sniffer and loves to hunt for hidden treats.
If you're ready to go toe to toe with this world champion of cuddling, put in an application.

ADOPTION EVENTS:
Adoption events are updated at the top of each dogs animals' as their foster home signs up. Check back for updates on which events they will be attending. If an event is not listed within their bio above, the animal is not planning to attend. Please understand that all of our pets are in volunteer foster homes and sometimes "life" happens and the foster family cannot make it to their scheduled adoption event. If you are traveling from a far distance to meet a specific animal, please understand we cannot guarantee event attendance. We recommend filling out an application and we will set up a private appointment. Private appointments are only scheduled after an application is submitted and approved.
ADOPTION PROCEDURE:
The first step in our process is to complete an online adoption application on our website:
Note: In most circumstances Underdog Rescue will only adopt within 60 miles of Minneapolis, MN.
All of our foster animals can be seen by appointment with an approved adoption application. Contact us at http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/contact-us/ if you have further questions.
FOSTER CARE:
All of our animals are fostered in individual homes or doggie daycare facilities. While they are in our care, they are part of our families and given lots of love. We work on training, crate-training and socialization prior to adoption, but each bio is written by the foster as they see them, in their home. Each animal's behavior is evaluated and we have a sense of its temperament and personality, but it cannot be guaranteed. We look for adopters who will give each animal the wonderful life and permanent home that he or she deserves in time and with patience. If you have an interest and ability to be a foster home, please visit our website www.underdogrescuemn.com/foster-applications and fill out a foster application.
NUTRITION:
Nutrition is vital to the rehabilitation and life-long health of our pets. All of our foster animals are fed a premium diet such as NutriSource, Canidae, Orijen, Nature's Variety, Fromm, Pure Vita, Stella and Chewy's, Primal, or balanced raw diet. All adopters are required to continue providing premium diets for the life of the animal.
