Nigel was born as the runt of the litter. When he was adopted he was brought on as a hospice puppy. He was the smallest of the litter and when he was adopted at 10 weeks he was 4# while his siblings were all approximately 15# and over. He was brought into a household with one of his siblings and other dogs. He was given the exact same training as the other dogs were but he is a slow learner. The key here is that he does learn, it just takes a little extra time. He even learned how to sit. While at the vet, the vet tech even taught him to shake. Physically, when he was born his foot was malformed which somehow without any intervention corrected itself over time. His gait however remains something similar to a Lippizanner stallion. He prances. Its cute, but Is one sign of his special need. He likes other dogs but mostly he likes to watch them. He likes people but loves slow and gentle touches the best. He shows zero signs of aggression, but will back away if touched too quickly. He does like to be held. He loves going for walks on his leash. He meanders a bit and you certainly cannot pull him anywhere. He uses a harness with a handle and can be gently guided. He loves to run. He runs with his little prance and again it’s fairly adorable. One of his comforts if you are holding him is to hold your arm in his mouth. I have switched my arm out for a chewy toy which also works; he doesn’t hurt, he just wants to hold on.
Grooming is an interesting endeavor, the previous owner struggled with it as well. I simply broke it down into more manageable sessions and we did fine. He is afraid of the hand held shower spraying him so, if you hold the shower head against his body, he is comfy and calm. He is potty trained on a schedule and hasn't had an accident since week 2 at his foster home.. He needs to be with a family who can allow him to go out every four-six hours for the time being. He kennels very nicely. He kennels overnight perfectly well too. I do limit his water at night and make sure that he goes poop after dinner. We are accident free overnight when we do these things(10pm-7am currently). He is a pup with a fairly mellow disposition. He has a play growl that you will recognize quickly. Sometimes he growls at me when I rub his belly but he’s not angry -I think of it as his dog purr. Very cute!
He has been around my dog savvy grandchildren (5-8) and he has been fine with them. I do not think toddlers would be recommended, but any older than a toddler is great. Children in the home should be dog savvy. He loves sleeping on my papasan chair with my other dogs -he does that a lot. Overall, he is a friendly and mellow dude. While he has some quirks, he is going to make someone so extremely happy.
Many of our dogs are rescued from commercial breeders where they spent their lives getting comfort from their canine friends. In turn, most require another companion dog in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a particular dog, and do not currently have a dog residing with you, please understand that your home might not be the right fit for many of our dogs.

ADOPTION EVENTS:
Adoption events are updated at the top of each dogs animals' as their foster home signs up. Check back for updates on which events they will be attending. If an event is not listed within their bio above, the animal is not planning to attend. Please understand that all of our pets are in volunteer foster homes and sometimes "life" happens and the foster family cannot make it to their scheduled adoption event. If you are traveling from a far distance to meet a specific animal, please understand we cannot guarantee event attendance. We recommend filling out an application and we will set up a private appointment. Private appointments are only scheduled after an application is submitted and approved.
ADOPTION PROCEDURE:
The first step in our process is to complete an online adoption application on our website:
Note: In most circumstances Underdog Rescue will only adopt within 60 miles of Minneapolis, MN.
All of our foster animals can be seen by appointment with an approved adoption application. Contact us at http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/contact-us/ if you have further questions.
FOSTER CARE:
All of our animals are fostered in individual homes or doggie daycare facilities. While they are in our care, they are part of our families and given lots of love. We work on training, crate-training and socialization prior to adoption, but each bio is written by the foster as they see them, in their home. Each animal's behavior is evaluated and we have a sense of its temperament and personality, but it cannot be guaranteed. We look for adopters who will give each animal the wonderful life and permanent home that he or she deserves in time and with patience. If you have an interest and ability to be a foster home, please visit our website www.underdogrescuemn.com/foster-applications and fill out a foster application.
NUTRITION:
Nutrition is vital to the rehabilitation and life-long health of our pets. All of our foster animals are fed a premium diet such as NutriSource, Canidae, Orijen, Nature's Variety, Fromm, Pure Vita, Stella and Chewy's, Primal, or balanced raw diet. All adopters are required to continue providing premium diets for the life of the animal.
